IBM plans to commercialize quantum computers in 3-5 years
IBM plans to begin commercial use of quantum computers in the next 3-5 years. This happens when developed by the American company quantum computers will surpass in terms of computing power of the supercomputers that exist currently. This was stated by Director of IBM Research in Tokyo and Vice-President of Norishige Morimoto (Morimoto, Norishige) at the recent summit IBM think Summit Taipei.
It is worth noting that IBM started development in the field of quantum computing in 1996. Research work has led to the fact that in 2016, the company created a 5-Kubany quantum computer. At the annual CES 2019 developer presented a 20-cubanow computing system called IBM Q System One.
Mr. Morimoto in his speech said that soon IBM will present a 58-Kubany quantum computer. He also noted that the existing quantum computers are not able to compete with the supercomputers, which are based on traditional computing architecture. This means that quantum computers will be profitable only after the start of production of the 58-Kubanych computing systems.
This statement confirms the view of many experts, who claimed that the so-called «quantum supremacy» over the traditional computers will be achieved with the advent of the 50-Kubanych machines.
Mr. Morimoto also said that quantum computers are not moving systems, as for normal operation they should be placed in an isolated environment with a temperature ?273 °C. This means that quantum systems must be combined with traditional supercomputers at the software level.
We will remind, in addition to IBM related projects in this direction are actively developing such giants as Google, Microsoft, NEC, Haier and Alibaba. Each of the tech giants are striving to obtain a superior presence in the segment of quantum computing.
