Yellow night mode display turned out to be harmful for sleep?
For many years in smartphones applies the so-called «night mode», implying the decrease in light intensity short wavelength (blue) spectrum, which negatively affects the production of the sleep hormone melatonin. This is achieved by reducing the brightness or completely disable the blue sub pixels (leaving red and green) that comprise the display of any device.
However, new research has shown that not all so simple: the advantage of night mode is probably outweighed by another factor related to how the cone cells in the eyes perceive yellow light. It turned out that they are much more sensitive to the yellow tint, which can lead to a strong balancing effect. In other words, using the night mode can be even more detrimental to sleep than lack of it.
Anyway, still not proven yellow night mode, as well as possible harm. What can be said about the simple and proven solution – the rejection of the use of smartphones and computers just before bedtime. Because the main effect on the production of sleep hormone has it is light regardless of its color spectrum, so this is the best way to easily fall asleep – just not looking in the smartphone/tablet/monitor/TV.
